BAARAT DHUKAO / ARRIVAL (Sat 10 July evening)

In a colourful and grand procession, the groom, looking majestic and accompanied by relatives, arrives at the bride's house (the wedding venue). A band playing traditional/film music accompanies. He wears a bright red turban called 'safa' or 'pecha'. On his turban is a 'sirpench' a kind of brooch. The 'chattar' is the Royal Umrella signifying descendance from King Agrasen. The younger members of the baaraat dance around and the groom arrives in this fashion at the wedding venue. At the entrance of the venue, on the top , a small shrine is hung with 7 birds carved on the top and a small murthi (idol) of Ganesh inside it. The groom hits this with a stick and only then enters the wedding hall. The groom is received by the bride's mother with an aarti. The baraatis are then served sumptuous snacks personally by the bride's family. The groom is then led to the mandap which is beautifully decorated with flowers - jasmine , marigold and roses.
